Voter Registration Fact Sheet



A. Registration Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age; a citizen of the U.S., a resident of South Carolina, the county and the voting precinct at which he/she offers to vote; neither be now under court order declaring mental incompetence nor confined in a public prison; not have been convicted of a felony or crimes against the election laws, unless having served a complete sentence, including probation or parole time, or have been pardoned for such offenses; and must have been duly registered by the board of registration and the registration must be dated at least thirty days prior to the election.
B. Registration Locations/Times
  • You may register to vote at any Library, the Chamber of Commerce, Horry County Board of Registration, and Assessor's Office or by mail. All voters must be registered 30 days prior to the election.
C. Absentee Registration Requirements
  • Any qualified elector in certain categories may receive absentee ballots by submitting an official absentee ballot application form to the county board of voter registration. The absentee ballot application form may be requested from the registration board by the voter, a member of his/her immediate family or by the authorized representative of the voter. This application may be submitted anytime during the calendar year in which the election in which the qualified elector wishes to vote by absentee ballot is being held. Completed applications must be returned to the county registration board not later than 5:00 p.m., four days before the election. However, any elector applying in person may make such application until 5:00 p.m. on the day before the election.
D. You may change your party affiliation by:
  • Voters declare their political party affiliation on the day of the primary election. There is no prior registration of political party affiliation in the county.
E. Republican Primary Election Date:
  • The second Tuesday in June
F. General Election Date:
  • The first Tuesday after the first Monday of November.
